In December 1983, Pastor Barnes announced his resignation as CO-Pastor and that he would be leaving in January of 1984. God had been working on him and was calling him to church planting. Pastor Barnes served God lovingly and faithfully for 15 years here in Madison. The church then took Pastor Barnes on as one of it’s missionaries in January of 1984. It was at this time that Pastor Robert Weiss became the Senior Pastor. Pastor Robert Weiss had a love for the Holy Scriptures that made him instrumental in the lives of many. His time here was spent nurturing young Christians, healing the sick and wounded of heart, and building the mature Christian. From 1986 - 1995 Pastor Weiss was also the chaplain at the Dane County Jail, bringing the Gospel and providing counseling to the inmates.
Pastor Bob Weiss continued the strong emphasis and love for the missionary. By 1985, Madison Baptist Temple was supporting about 25 missionaries at home and abroad. Many significant changes were made over the next few years. Under Pastor Weiss, the church changed it’s name from Madison Baptist Temple to Madison Baptist Church, and improved the sign from wood to a well-lit sign that would allow messages to be posted to the community. They also purchased Bibles to put in the pews so visitors would have the Bible available during scripture readings. By the end of Pastor Robert’s time of service as Pastor of Madison Baptist Church, the church was supporting 29 missionaries.
In May of 1999 Pastor Robert Weiss announced his resignation effective June 13th, 1999. The pulpit committee presented his son, Fred Weiss, who was currently Pastor of Harvest Time Baptist Church in Grand Island, Nebraska as a candidate for Pastor.
Pastor Fred Weiss received a majority vote and was called to be the Pastor on May 16th, 1999.
The Lord opened many doors in Pastor Fred’s life pointing him to Madison Baptist Church. Pastor Fred was handed the baton and he took it with enthusiasm, and grace. His first Sunday as Pastor was on Fathers Day, 1999. Pastor Fred has continued the strong emphasis on missions, and under his leadership, the church has added 16 new missionaries bringing the current total to 45.
On June 30th, 1999 Pastor Robert and Pastor Fred together burned the mortgage for the church property and buildings. As of this writing the church is debt free. Pastor Robert had wanted to pay off the mortgage before leaving.
Through this wonderful occasion, God encouraged him for his faithfulness.
Pastor Robert Weiss had served Madison Baptist Church for 16 years.
