On January 7th, 1970, after being with Madison Baptist Temple for nearly one year, they began to support Pastor Barnes for $10 per week, with regular increases over the next several months. On March 11th, 1970 the church approved for the trustees to begin looking for property so a new place of worship could be built . Two weeks later the trustees presented a parcel of land, 3.2 acres, located on Portage Ave., and the church voted to purchase this land.
Financing was different in those days for religious organizations. Not many banks wanted to loan a church money. So on July 8th, 1970 the trustees presented a Bond Issue Resolution & Trust Indenture that was accepted by the church.
Pastor Barnes, his family, friends and members of the church, sacrificially gave of time and money.
Pastor Barnes along with many other layman and preachers built the building and parsonage on Portage.
On Mothers Day, 1971 Madison Baptist Temple met for the 1st time at 2323 Portage Ave.
The Church continued to grow and many lives were touched. Madison Baptist Temple truly was grounded under the ministry of Pastor Clyde Barnes.
In June of 1983 Pastor Robert Weiss had resigned his position in Denver, Colorado, and was about to leave for Wisconsin. He left the house and then, realizing he had forgotten something, went back in to get it. Just then, the phone rang. It was Victory Baptist Church in Madison asking him to candidate. In July of 1983, Robert Weiss became the Pastor of Victory Baptist Church.
One morning Pastor Weiss and Pastor Barnes were preparing for their days. At the same time, God spoke to both of them about merging the two churches. Pastor Weiss called Pastor Barnes, and they agreed to meet at Denny’s. Both men wanted the other to speak first and reveal what God had showed him. Finally one of them did, and they took the idea of the merger to their respective churches.
On August 7th, 1983 the Pastors and the members of Victory Baptist Church and Madison Baptist Temple agreed that it was the will of God to merge. At that time Pastor Barnes and Pastor Weiss became CO-Pastors of Madison Baptist Temple.
One of the ministries that came with Pastor Robert Weiss from Victory Baptist Church was their Christian school. This school has continued to be a blessing to the church since being included in the merger.
