History Of The Church
Exodus 17:14a
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for
a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua:"
The Bible is many things to the Christian. It is our source of encouragement, direction, correction and much more. It is exciting for us to read about the miracles that the LORD did for and through the children of Israel throughout the Old Testament. It is often difficult to understand why God would use men the way He used Moses, Joseph, David, Isaiah and others. Through these men, God gave us the promise of our Messiah. In the New Testament, God fulfills His promise of the Messiah. Jesus is born and crucified for the atonement of our sins. Jesus did more than just provide us a ticket to heaven. He lived a life we are to emulate and He gave us promises and commandments to live by.
His life is a pattern for the man of God and for the flock that God gives him to lead. Just as God used men in the Old and New Testaments, He still wants to use us today. The men God used in the Bible spoke of the works that God had done in the lives of His people. Just as God is alive today, He is still working in the lives of His children in much the same way He did before.
The sad thing is, we have become unthankful, and we easily forget that this Holy God loves us and wants us to remember what He has done. God provided the Bible for many reasons, and one of them was so that we would remember. He wants us to remember history. He wants us to remember and write it in a book, on our door posts, and especially on the tables of our hearts. He wants us to rehearse them before those who will come after us.
The history of a church can be an exciting and beautiful series of events. So many different things happen in the life of a church. Each one has a unique and specific purpose orchestrated by the hand of God. A Church will go through many changes in its life. They will laugh and rejoice together and they will weep and sorrow. They will celebrate in marriage and mourn in death. Members will come and go, each one leaving something for us to remember and learn from. Properties and building may be bought, sold and/or remodeled. One of the biggest changes a Church may go through is the changing of a Pastor. The Preacher can leave the biggest impact on a Church. Because of this, much prayer and consideration goes into this decision. All of these things are tools that God uses to mold His Church. He wants us to remember how good He is toward us. He wants us to remember... HIS-STORY!
